The reproduction of this late 18th century French The reproduction of this late 18th century French wallpaper ‘Emerson Arabesque’ by @adelphipaperhangings was recently commissioned by the curators at George Washington’s Mount Vernon to adorn the President’s Bedchamber. Since fragments of the room’s original wallcovering were not sufficient in size or detail to determine a pattern, this one, from the French firm of Réveillon, Jaquemart, et Bénard was chosen.

The original wallpaper was selected by Edward and Abigail Emerson for the parlor of their home, the Emerson Homestead in York, Maine, probably in the early 1790s. Colorways consisting of bright oranges and reds on a light blue ground were not at all uncommon at the time and were inspired, in part, by recent discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Unlike some of Réveillon’s earlier arabesques, which were abundantly populated with all manner of classical elements, the Emerson Arabesque offers a structured yet airy sense of order. Discover more historical block printed wallcoverings inside JR NY @danddbuilding

“The process of translating our fabric designs into wallpaper has been fascinating on many levels. As artists, we have reveled in considering them afresh, revisiting their forms, tones, and colors, and seeing them come to life in new ways. From a technical and craft perspective, we have loved the challenge of reproducing our fabrics’ sense of depth, movement, texture, and intrigue on a flat surface in an entirely different medium. It has been achieved through skill, knowledge, experience, and technology; yet it retains that essential mystery and magic that makes this work so intensely rewarding.” Tom Helme, co-founder, Fermoie

The new wallpapers are available now inside JR NY & FL.
